There are three words I want us to look at today in regards to temporal, (time), things.
- FINITE, which means with a beginning and with and end. A good example of this would be a tree.
- INFINITE, which means with a beginning and without an end. A good example of this would be a man.
- Eternal, which means without beginning of days or end of life. We look to God for this.
What Is Eternal Life? What is The Definition Of Eternal Life?
Webster's Dictionary defines the word eternal as this;
- Without beginning or end; lasting forever; always existing (opposed to temporal ): eternal life.
- Perpetual; ceaseless; endless: eternal quarreling; eternal chatter.
- Enduring; immutable: eternal principles.
- Metaphysics. Existing outside all relations of time; not subject to change.
Over and over again we see that the gift of God is eternal life. What is this eternal life? A better question would be, who is this eternal life? According to the Bible, Jesus is. Please read above of what the definition of eternal is again. The Bible does not say until, unless, except or but. The Bible simply says ETERNAL!!
What Is Eternal Life? What Is Everlasting Life?
What is the difference between eternal life and everlasting life? The Bible speaks about both. Eternal life is God in the person of Jesus that lives within your heart because He is God, and God is eternal. Everlasting life simply means a life that lasts forever. Everlasting life is what we have when Jesus saves us. Eternal means without beginning or end where everlasting means without end.
When someone comes to know and receives Jesus as their Lord and Savior, Jesus moves into their heart. This is also known as the quickening which literally means to make alive for He is life. This is what the name, Emanuel, means. It means God with us.
The new life that God gives us begins when a person becomes a new creation at salvation and will never end and is everlasting.
What Is Eternal Life? Do You Want To Receive It?
Do you want to receive eternal life? What do you have to do to receive eternal life? You have to agree with God that you are a sinner and that you cannot save yourself and that you must have Him to help you.
Believe in Jesus and that Jesus is God and then invite Jesus to come into your heart. The Bible says that whosoever does this has eternal life. John 3:36 – “….He who believes in the Son has everlasting life….”
When Jesus said, “I am the truth,” He is saying that the truth about God from the Word is Jesus. He IS the Living Word. The Bible says that the Word and Jesus are the same. The Bible is alive. Hebrews 4:12 King James Version (KJV) 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Jesus not only said that He was the Truth He also said, “I am the way.” He is not “a” way, but He is “the” way to Heaven. There is no other way. If your son got bit by a snake and you took him to the doctor and wanted the doctor to know what bit him, would you take “a” snake or would you take “the” snake? There is only one way to Heaven and His name is Jesus.
Jesus came to earth to seek out the lost and to pay for our sins. If you want to go to Heaven and not to Hell, then the Truth is that Jesus is the only Way. The word “way” here literally means “gate.” Jesus said, “I am the life.” When we are truly saved, we have more than religion. We have a personal relationship with Jesus. Jesus is within us and indwells us and the life here on earth that we live is to be the life of Christ.
The Bible promised us eternal life which is Jesus moving inside us to live, and He said our lives would be everlasting. He also said that He would never leave nor forsake us. Let me now ask you a question. If He leaves, was it Eternal Did He tell the truth? If you could lose your salvation, did it end? If it ends was it everlasting?
If we can lose our eternal life (Jesus) when we sin, it means that Jesus doesn't keep us saved so He couldn't have saved us to start with. It would mean that we keep ourselves saved.
What Is Eternal Life? Is It Something I Earned?
Titus 3:5 says, – “….not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit….” If I was to buy you a lawn mower and I lacked one penny paying for it and so you tossed a penny up on the counter would I have bought it or would we have bought it?
If we have to help Jesus at all by our good works to be saved, then the above Scripture is not True. Eternal life, which is salvation, has nothing to do with us. Eternal life is a gift. Romans 6:23 – “….The gift of God is eternal life….” Please read John 3:16 and tell me what it says that God gave us because He loved the world so much. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
