One of the most crippling tools the old devil has in his bag of tricks to cripple the souls of mankind is depression. Depression takes the fight out of you. Well, it has been said that all evil needs to triumph, is for good men to do nothing. In this post, I am going to tell you what Depression is. I am going to show you what causes depression and What you can do about Depression and I am going to give you some Bible verses to study about Depression. Why? That's bloody simple!! The more you know and understand the better you can say, “ Satan, in the name of Jesus and according to His Word…LET ME GO!!!!”
The Definition Of Depression
The word, “Depression,” is used in English to refer to anything and everything from just some form of mild discouragement to out of control manic- depressive behavior. This might include something as simple as, “Monday morning blues” to a full blown “masochistic blow- out.”
Webster's Dictionary defines depression as “gloomy, dejected, sad, discouraged, despondent, feeling of inadequacy.”
The Greek words are actually in the Bible's manuscripts. In II Cor. 7:6 – tapeinous – “lowly, cast down, brought low.” In II Cor. 4:8 – exaporeomai – from ek=out of; poreuomai=way through. “No way through!”
No hope! despairing!
Bible Verses For Depression. What Causes Depression?
Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
I know that I am painting with a very broad paintbrush, in broad strokes, but I do dare to say many if not most Christians, suffering from depression. To some point because of daily and constant war fatigue of spiritual battle against Satan and the minions of the damned!! If I don't have a head on collision with the wiles of the Devil the first thing every morning, I get worried I may be heading in the same direction as he.
Because the Bible is the love letter of Jesus to His Church. Don't run off. I told you I have Good News To Modern Man if you are lost. The Bible teaches that whosoever will and calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.
Rom. 10:9-10 says, “9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
You may want to say, “I Am Suffering All Alone and I Am Hopeless!!” The feeling of being all alone and hopeless is part of the lie Satan sells you on when you are under spiritual attack. When you have a strong biblical foundation, you will realize that you are never alone because Jesus has promised never to leave nor forsake you.
You are never alone!! You can also find in the stories of the Bible where even the Bible Giants and heroes of the faith experienced and suffered bouts of depression. There is, Moses in Numbers 11: 10-16, King David did in Psalm 51 and Psalm 32: 1-5 and other passages, Even, Elijah suffered from bouts of depression in 1 Kings 19:1-18, Job did through the whole book of Job, Jonah (Jonah 4:1-11), Psalmist (Psalm 73). So, you have hope!!
What Can I do About Depression? You Ask?
I have good news to bring, and this is why I sing. Christians can find hope in the Bible!! Can you find hope for depression in the Bible if you are not a Christian? NO!! Why??
- We Should Know We have hope in God.
- We Should Have Joy in Our Salvation.
- We Should Show Active Love for God and Others.
1. We Should Know We have hope in God.
God encourages you to call upon Him when you feel hopeless; He says, “call upon [Him] in the day of trouble; I will deliver you” (Psalm 50:15). Understand this, that hopelessness is a hallmark symptom of depression and feeds and genders to the depression. It is comforting to know the grace of God in Jesus Christ is the sum of all hope according to Colossians 1:5-6, 23, 27; 1 Timothy 1:1.
The Apostle Paul, who was a man who had more than his fair share of both tribulation and suffering, said, “We have placed our hope in Him that He will deliver us again.”
2. We Should Have Joy in Our Salvation.
With every time you turn the news on or go on Facebook or some other form of Social Media these days, you are immediately slapped right in the face with some little child being left in a hot car or some terrorist attack, you will soon realize that we live in a fallen world.
It seems with all the violence and explosions going on at any given time, somewhere in the world, the world is staggering through space like a drunk man. This world is one in which it always seems like good things are coming to an end. The tragic dimension of life with a strong lack of peace will persist until the kingdom of God comes fully when Jesus returns to set on the throne of His father, David, in Jerusalem.
However, we have the joy of salvation every time we realize, again and again, that all our sins have been forgiven!! We know that though this world may vanish away and friends forsake us, we will live forever with our eternally happy Father God and we know He desires for us to share in His joy. We should never get over the joy the gospel gives us to know that we are saved in Jesus from the wrath to come.
3. We Should Show Active Love for God and Others.
The two greatest commandments are to Love God supremely and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Love for God and others is crucial because every mother's child among us are going to find ourselves stuck in morbid self-involvement, which is going to keep us from following the Great Commission, The 10 Commandments and the Golden Rule with all our hearts.
Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.”
When we truly love Jesus with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and love to others like ourselves, we will find true hope and depression will dissipate.
