Does God have a dress code?
In the days of antiquity, the rich and the noble wore tassels in their clothes so they could flaunt their wealth to people who were practically homeless and starving to death.
However, the people of God were to set aside to be a holy nation and a kingdom of priests. Exodus 19:6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
God's people are supposed to be and strive to be and stay holy and sacred. This just means that God's children are to be set apart from the world to serve God. The true people of God are to be set apart in almost every facet of their lives. In dress, in diet, in conduct, we are even called to have a posture of worship and not of pride.
The way the children of Israel was to be dressed in such a way to remind them to be set apart. Cords of blue were to be a constant reminder of the righteous “commandments of the Lord”.
The Beauty Within And The Church
1 Peter 3:3-7 (KJV) 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; (This is why some women dress the way they do).
Let's pause here to take a deeper look at verse 3, shall we?
- Can't plait your hair.
- Can't wear jewelry.
- Must go everywhere naked. What?? You take the first two this stupid so stop putting on clothes. Silly, right? So is saying you can't wear gold or plait your hair. Don't take it out of context. It is saying that true adorning is that of the heart not your hair, jewelry or clothes. The way you carry yourself is to be your true beauty)
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. 7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
I believe verse 7 is there for every old bowed back Baptist that thinks he is Little Lord Ha Ha and that somehow his wife is his footstool instead of his help mate. Did you know that God will not hear your prayers if you do not honor your wife and live with her according to the way Christ loves the Church? (Christ is my Lord and Master and He has never forced me to do anything.)
As Christians, we too are called to live, walk, and breathe in constant awareness that there is a Creator revealing himself to his creation, drawing close to every one of us because we are in a relationship with the Creator Himself through His only begotten son, Jesus.
The Bible both commands and warns God's people, “not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes” but to humbly find our identity in the Lord. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25).
The Beauty Within Is A Strong Prayer Life
We are to walk in a never ceasing attitude of prayer remembering that it is God who has given us the victory and that it was by His hand and not the hand of Moses that the children of Israel were delivered from Egypt. That it is by His hand and not our own that we overcome the devil and set the captives free.
I remember my friend and brother in Christ, Layman Brewer, who was once my pastor and who has gone to be with Jesus now, said he was once asked, if it was a sin for women to wear makeup. After he had thought about it for a while, he told them that he thought that it was a sin for some women to wear makeup, and a sin for some not to wear makeup.
What did he mean? Well, let me be plain, for plain words make plain understanding. Is it right for a woman to wear makeup? If she is doing it for the right reason there is nothing wrong with her wearing makeup. If she is looking good for her husband and herself and wants to please him.
However, if she is wearing it to play the whore and to pick up some guy, or in these days some woman, for perverted sex outside the definitions and confines of the limitations of sex that the Bible sets forth. It is a sin. I don't think that requires a degree for you to understand that sex is to be between one man and one woman within the confines of holy matrimony. Enjoy sex with your spouse, as long as you are not so stupid to invite others, or commit sodomy it is undefiled.
Should The Beauty Within Be Dressed In Rags? Sure, If That Is All You Have. Is It?
I personally think you should wear your best to Church. What do I mean? If a clean t-shirt and a pair of jeans or overalls are your best then wear them. If you have a nice suit, wear that.
Is it a sin to wear nice clothes and have nice things? Again, that depends on why you have them or want them. Money is not the root of all evil, the love of money is the root of all evil. You can be flat broke and make the desire to get wealth your god, and cause a lot of trouble for yourself. You can love money and not have it.
Solomon was well dressed. What's wrong with looking good? Nothing if you are doing it to look sharp and professional and to be your best. I always pressed my uniforms to look sharp, when my health allowed me to work. I knew my job and I was the professional so I dressed the part. I never expect people to take financial advice from a homeless man. Do you? Then why are you looking like a million dollars when you go to work? All green and wrinkled. The clothes, as they say, makes the man.
However, if you are wearing a $4000.00 suit and a $10,000.00 Rolex and going into the projects to rape God's children of their resources, using the name of Jesus as your gun, God and I have a problem with you.
