I am a Christian soldier, I am responsible for my action and dedicated to the principles that set God's people free. When necessary, I am prepared to lay down my life in defense of His name and His Church. I will never turn my back on Israel.

I want to show you the qualities of a good soldier.

We should all remember the ones who paid the ultimate price to ensure our freedom. There have been countless thousands of great soldiers who gave up the ghost for this country under eagle wings. While we should honor the war dead scattered throughout America's bloody history, a great Soldier called Jesus comes to my mind. As often as we will, we celebrate the Lord's Supper and call to mind the death, burial, resurrection and the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus was a real soldier!

Even while we thank a soldier for his service, and honor our war dead, and worship our resurrected Warrior, there is another significant group of troops that leaps into my mind today. I am humbled when I remember those in the Army of the LORD, who died in the war-torn fronts of faith along, with the legacies left for us to emulate. I do not recall the first one other than Jesus; that was worth a plug nickel on their own. I am talking of those the Bible calls heroes. I'm talking about thieves and liars and a whore and con men among other notable traits. I am referring all the slugs mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11.

Personally, I am not worth my salt. I am no good; I have never been any good. You are very foolish, if you ever see me, as anything greater than a dollar store teddy bear. Hebrews 11 is called the faith chapter. Mighty men of battle and extraordinary women of action, good soldiers of the cross and who gave up the ghosts on the battlefront of the Holy Land and beyond.

Servant of the Lord who preserved our precious faith with their blood. I want to honor them with this post.

As we think of these people such as Rahab the harlot, Abraham the liar and Moses the murder, who have sacrificed so much for us, I want to remind you of a very profound truth. They were not great because of themselves; what made them great was the One they placed faith in, they set their eyes on the Lord and set their faces like flints to perform their great commissions. One day, every person who has ever will read this, will be just a memory in the annals of time, as an example to those left in the land of the living.

When Holy hills of Heaven, call you. Just what kind of heritage, what kind of legacy will you leave, when you leave this world? When people take the time and remember the type of person you were, will they remember you as a soldier of the cross? Are you counted among the troops in the LORD's Army? Today is the great day of reckoning. Now is the expected day of the Lord. After you are dead, it will be forever too late! When the Apostle Paul came to the end of his life, he grew skinny in a Roman prison. It was from that old cell; the Apostle took necessary steps to ensure how people remembered him.

We remember him as a good soldier of the cross. Even in his darkest hours, he took the time to write to young Timothy, to tell him the secret of becoming a mighty warrior of the cross. It is that thought that I would like to consider, while I write this post that you are reading now, as we think together about the Qualities Of A Good Soldier of the cross. It is my intent to encourage and challenge each of us to become the best soldiers of the cross, that we can be for the glory of Jesus, the Christ, Son of the living God and our Lord.

I. Hebrews 2:3 HE IS A FOLLOWER

A. The first thing you need to do is to join the army of the Lord. You have to first get into the Army of the Lord to be a soldier.

Here are your marching orders. Receive Jesus as your Savior and LORD, John 3:3; Ephesians 2:8-9; Acts 16:31.

B. There is rank in the LORD's Army. There will always be someone higher than you. Every child of God is ranked under Jesus and is responsible for following those He has appointed.

Follow me as I follow Him and His will for our lives, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. If I am wrong, it is the LORD's place to take me down. God always has a way of cutting down to size – Ill. Gideon, Judges 7:1-9 – From a General to a Sargent to a Private!)

C. To refuse to follow orders is treason! If you are in the Lord's Army like I am, we have the obligation of obeying His orders, and loving not our lives, even unto the death!

The draft has not changed since the days of Matthew, Matthew 16:24. When we A.W.O.L. the Lord's desires, then we have crossed the line. We have gone from follower to traitor – James 4:17.

II. He Is Faithful

Hebrews 2:3-4; 4:7  HE IS FAITHFUL

A. Hebrews 2:3 His Patience – Endures the hardships of life and does not quit. Good soldiers of the cross realizes that there will not always be sunshine but that there will be a little rain sometimes. There will be troubles along the way, but the LORD is with us, and is not detoured by them. He understands our pain and is not forgetful that we are children of the dust.

Suffering is part of the Christian experience, John 16:33. (Ill. Please remember that the Christian is called upon to face life with extreme patience – Hebrews 12:1. The Christian soldier's characteristics are not swerved from his deliberate purpose and his holy calling and his loyalty to faith and piety, not even by even the greatest of temptations, trials and sufferings.

B. Hebrews 2:4 The Priorities of the soldier of the cross – Seeks to please the Commander. The Captain of the Lord's host. Notice that the Christian soldier has set his highest goal in life to please His Lord, Superior, and Commander, Jesus Christ. The Christian soldier knows that anything which interferes with his performance in spiritual warfare, must be done away with. The Christian soldier lives to please his/her Superior and does whatever it takes to get that job done!

Who comes first to you in your life? Whatever or whoever it is, that you have placed first, is your god! Which means they are an idol and God wages war on all idols. Pleasing Jesus is the first priority of every soldier of the cross, every child of God – 1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Corinthians 6:20.)

C. Hebrews 4:7 His Practice – The soldier of the cross guards the truths of the faith with his life. The soldier of the cross takes care of the things that are delivered to him. He is determined to do his/her job, and refuses to do anything to bring disgrace or dishonor upon the Lord or His bride, the Church. The soldier of the cross wants to live his/her life in such a way as to bring honor to the Lord and not dishonor. Are you keeping the faith in these last days? Ill. Philipians 1:27; Colossians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 2:11-12.)

I. The Soldier Of The Cross Is A Follower

II. The Soldier Of The Cross Is Faithful

III. The Soldier Of The Cross Is FAMILIAR

There are some things that the spiritual warfare soldiers just know. They are familiar with:

A.) With The Sound Of The Voice Of The Lord

John 10:3-5 The only way to get more familiar with the Lord's voice is to spend time in His Word, more time listening to it. Do you recognize Him when He speaks to you? Do you say, ” Here I am, send me”?

B.) With The Skill Of Using His Weapons – (Ill. Ephesians 6:10-18) The good soldier knows that he is engaged in mortal warfare and he knows that the only way to succeed in the fight is to be proficient in the use of spiritual weaponry. You and I would do well to learn the art of spiritual warfare if we intend to succeed for the glory of the Lord.

C ). With The Strategy Of The Enemy – (Ill. 2 Corinthians 11:14; 1 Peter 5:8) The good soldier knows that the enemy is ever active and never rests. The good soldier knows that the enemy is shrewd and ever attacking, but he also knows the Lord is there to help him, Hebrews 13:5. He knows that regardless of the trap, God will make a way of escape for him, 1 Corinthians 10:13. The good soldier studies the methods of his enemy and learn his weaknesses and these exploits to the fullest extent of his ability. The good Christian soldier needs to be wise to the ways of the devil and he needs to know that the Lord Jesus is greater than any enemy we will ever face, 1 John 4:4.)

D.) With The Shadows Of His Friends – (Hebrews 11:25) The good soldier not only cares about his own welfare, but he also looks out for the welfare of his fellow soldiers, Galatians 6:2. He learns about them by being around them. There is a need for the soldiers of the Lord to train together.

III. A Good Soldier Is Familiar

IV. 4:7 A Good Soldier IS A FIGHTER (The Apostle Paul makes three statements in this verse that describe the good soldier. Notice:

A.) A Good Soldier Is Determined – The good soldier does not retreat in the face of the enemy, he does not run from a fight. Instead, he stands his ground and fights the battle until the battle is over! (Ill. Many Christian soldiers have dropped out of the battle! I challenge you not be among that number! Ill. 1 Timothy 1:19-20)

B.) A Good Soldier Is Driven – The good soldier realizes that the battle does not run according to his time frame. He knows that another is in charge of the duration of the battle, but the good soldier is driven to finish. The good soldier is in the battle to the finish. Are you? What would it take to make you quit this morning? Many Christians are about one disaster and one service away from quitting on the Lord. Does that describe you? I challenge you to keep serving and keep fighting!

C.) A Good Soldier Is Dedicated – The good soldier dedicates himself to keeping his oath. He is determined to live for the Lord regardless of the personal cost. The good soldier keeps the faith, do you? He keeps it by living it, sharing it and defending it all the time. The faith is precious to the good soldier and he does everything in his power to keep it pure and undefiled.

II. A Good Soldier Is Faithful

III. A Good Soldier Is Familiar

IV. A Good Soldier Is A Fighter

V. 4:7-8 A Good Soldier IS A FINISHER

A.) A Good Soldier Has Resolve -The good soldier is in it for the long haul. He does not quit at the first hint of trouble. He is a finisher. God give us Christians with the attitude of finishers. We need some who will stay by the stuff in these days!

B.) A Good Soldier Has A Reason -Why does the good soldier endure hardship, stay in the fight, follow the Leader selflessly? The good soldier knows the price that was paid by his Superior to make a place for him in the army. The good soldier knows his Lord loves him and that Jesus died to make a way of salvation for him. Therefore, he loves the Lord and no price becomes too high for the good soldier to pay.

C.) A Good Soldier Has His Reward – The good soldier finishes his course, because he knows that at the end of the war, every deed will be rewarded by the Commander in chief. For those who stay in the battle, there will come a glad day of blessing. They will hear the Lord say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant…”, Matthew 25:21, 23. What will be waiting you when you meet Jesus?

Conclusion: Would you classify yourself as a soldier of the cross as a soldier of the Lord? I know that I recognize areas where I could be a better soldier of the cross.

If you do not know Jesus as your LORD, then I beg you on bended knee, because He will not even ask. He says, “come unto me.” Will you come to the Lord now and allow Him to make things as they ought to be?

When you pass from the Earth, will it be said that you were a good soldier of the Lord, that you were a good soldier of the cross? It can be! But, that is up to you! The way of the cross is seldom easy, but it does lead home.
