Nehemiah 2:17 17 Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.

Jerusalem, Jesus Wept Over You.

There is an old tale about putting a frog in a pot of water and turning up the temperature by one degree every day. The story goes that the frog acclimates to such a small change easily and gradually will be swimming around in boiling water feeling right at home.

There is an expression about not being able to see the forest for the trees. This goes a long way in answering the question as to why Nehemiah had to ask the people of Jerusalem which had been lying in ruins for more than 125 years to look around them at the rubble.

The People Were Broken And Jerusalem Laid Wasted

They had been living and carrying out day to day activities in the rubble heaps of Jerusalem's ruins for more than ten years.

So why was it necessary for Nehemiah to tell them to take a look at the “ruins” and to rebuild the wall? That's blood simple. The Israelite had become so callous to the trash deposit that they called home they had to look at it again, for the first time.

Living in those conditions day after day they became numb to stepping over chunks of concrete along with not having gates to protect them from the enemies. This broken down city became a comfortable home for the people of God. Unfortunately, we too can become comfortable with a wreck of a life, that sin will do to our bodies, mind, emotions, etc. Sin will slowly leave us just a shell, and we will barely notice the subtle changes of a wasted life.

The only voice we will hear is the voice of the destroyer, who only comes to steal, kill and to destroy. Listen to the voice of Satan coming out of your buddy's mouth, “just one beer with us bro, just smoke one doobie with me.” Yeah right, you better ask Mr. Webster, the definition of a friend. You see misery loves company.

“It is not a sin to me because I am not convicted by it. Maybe you have had something vile in your life for so long, that your conscience has become seared and callous to the conviction of the Holy Spirit.  This is what our spiritual life becomes when we grieve and quench the Holy Spirit so long that we become callous to God, and the way He desires for us to live.

Jerusalem Sinned And Were Lay Wasted. What Makes You Think You Will Escape?

I warn you; the Bible is very clear about the sin unto death, as long as your sins are keeping you up at night you may be okay, but when you can just yawn in the face of God and sleep, the sleep of the dead, you may be soon.

This is why we should walk in unceasing prayer asking God to show us the broken down areas that need to be rebuilt into His image. God does not want us to live in sin, numb to the ruins around us. He wants to set us free!
